July 01, 2007: Last Fall, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ADVENTURE named North Conway Among the Top 31 towns to live in, in the country. Also named were Boise, Idaho, Durango, Colorado, and Bishop, California to name just a few. North Conway, considered an “Outdoor Mecca” by National Geographic Adventure, is in the heart of Mt. Washington Valley, a collection of quaint New England towns and villages in the region of the White Mountains of New Hamsphire. Although widely recognized in New England as the “go to” locale for outdoor adventure, this newest recognition by such a respected publication adds another arrow to the quiver of distinctions this eclectic town has garnered. North Conway has also been recognized as one of the Top 10 Coolest Mountain Towns in the USA by Men’s Journal and been included in the “100 Best Getaway Towns” guidebook by David Vokac, North Conway has also been named one of the best places in the country to retire and one of the top ski towns in the United States. If I added to this the many “favorites” awards our local ski areas have won in both Ski and Skiing Magazines, including Wildcat Ski Area’s “#1 Scenery in North America” by Ski Magazine……there’d be so many awards, I’d be boasting. In its article, National Geographic Adventure says, “North Conway is the Northeast's only true mountain town. Its residents celebrate Mount Washington—site of some of the most volatile weather in North America—by paddling the Androscoggin River, ice climbing in Huntington Ravine, and tallying Presidential Range ascents.” The writer goes on to talk about the great brewed beer of a local brew meister and rock climbing lessons at EMS, Eastern Mountain Sports. Mt. Washington Valley, near the base of Mt. Washington…. is home to more than 200 shops, factory outlets, galleries, and boutiques. There are more than 250 alpine ski trails at seven mountain resorts including Attitash, Black Mountain, Bretton Woods, Cranmore, King Pine, Shawnee Peak and Wildcat Mountain. Cross country skiers will be find nearly 500K kilometers of trails at six diverse XC centers including Bear Notch Ski Touring, Bretton Woods Cross Country Center, Great Glen Trails, Jackson Ski Touring, King Pine’s XC Center, and the Mt. Washington Valley Ski touring and Snowshoe Center. In addition, there are hundreds of miles of terrain available for snowmobilers along with guided tours and rentals from places like Northern Extremes. Some of the world’s best ice and rock climbing outfitters are based here and offer daily lessons and equipment rentals too. EMS, IME and Ragged Mountain are this area’s best outfitters. This region is surrounded by more than 660,000 acres in the White Mountain National Forest……all for your enjoyment with….scenic hiking, road and mountain biking, waterfalls, views and vistas, cool swimming holes, fly fishing, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, rafting and moose tours. Many of the hotels in the area also give guided interpretive hikes to help you learn about the local birds and wildlife. There is just so much to do here the entire family will beg you to come back year after years. What is so great about this area is that it is truly a year round recreational mecca for the mild to the extreme visitor. Major airports are only one and a half hours away in either Portland, Maine or Manchester/Boston. Logan Airport in Boston, Massachusetts is only 2 and half hours away. We are really worth the drive from anywhere. Publisher
